Community Health
Societies are complex and interrelated. Health cannot be separated from other goals. The inextricable links between people and their environment constitute the basis for a socio ecological approach to health. The overall guiding principle for the world, nations, regions and communities alike is the need to encourage reciprocal maintenance - to take care of each other, our communities and our natural environment. Health promotion focuses on achieving equity in health. Health promotion action aims at reducing differences in current health status and ensuring equal opportunities and resources to enable all people to achieve their fullest health potential. This includes a secure foundation in a supportive environment, access to information, life
skills and opportunities for making healthy choices. Health promotion works through concrete and effective community action in setting priorities, making decisions, planning strategies and implementing them to achieve better health. At the heart of this process is the empowerment of communities, their ownership and control of their own endeavours and destinies.
The aim of Community Health Department is to promote Community Health through awareness creation and implementing health support activities in the grass root level. The society has made remarkable progress in its community health and nutrition programme during the period. As the prevalent allopathic system has become very expensive to the poor, KIDS has formulated an integrated health package which includes preventive as well as health promoting aspects.
A major initiative in the health sector performed by KIDS is the promotion of growing and usage of medicinal plants in each and every house hold. KIDS has a few mother nurseries of medicinal plants and the promotional activities of medicinal plants and the promotional activities of medicinal plants are done bt the health animators lead by the health co ordinator. 
As majority of the operational area of KIDS comprises of the costal belt of Eranakulam and thrissur districts, the need for addressing the issue of these areas. All these place are of thickly populated and so as the chances of epidamics is high. On such aspects, KIDS actively involve in taking preventive measures like supply of medicines, conducting medical camps, organizing awareness camps, participatory cleaning process etc.
Community Health Insurance Programme
KIDS focus on including all the families in its operational area in the Medi Claim Insurance Programme. 30,450 members from 6,350 families are insured under the Community Medi Claim Insurance Programme in association with the United India Insurance Company. The introduction of health insurance programme into the community significantly improved the quality of health services in these areas. The people also became aware of the different health aspects including medical needs and preventive measures. So far Rs. 25,43,600 has been distributed as claim to 3,238 families under this programme. The percentage point of the diseased persons who either consults a doctor or goes to the hospital increased after introducing this health insurance programme. This is a perfect indicator of the high level of community health status acquired by the villages where the health insurance programme was introduced. This shall be treated as a model and replicated in all the villages in the country.
