Natural Resource Management
At the turn of this century environmental issues have emerged as a major concern for the survival and welfare of mankind on this earth. Modern civilization armed with rapidly advancing tec
hnology and fast growing economic system is under increasing threat from its own activities causing pollution of air, water and soil. In order to achieve the objective of development in villages, people’s participation is essential. It is required to involve them actively in project activities by respecting their traditional knowledge and experimental ethics. Traditional knowledge has a sound base as it has been tested and practiced over the years. It is appropriate technology in particular climatic conditions and in the living conditions of people.
The Natural Resource Management Department aims at promoting activities that recharge the environment resources. The department gives utmost thrust for the rejuvenation of the o
rganic processes that interconnects the dynamics of biodiversity, soil and water resources. Extensive efforts for the eco-restoration were done by husbanding and nursing back to health the life support systems namely land, water and biomass of the area, which were degraded through misuse and overuse.
The major programmes conducted by the NRM Department are as follows:
Constructed Rain Water Harvesting Systems for ensuring the availability of drinking water all the year round.
KIDS had proposed the idea of harvesting rain water ten years back and had published a book in Malayalam. It was propagated through different medias to the government and the authorities. Now, the Government has made the Rain Water Harvesting system mandatory for all the houses.
KIDS is also disseminating the activities like Backwashing, Phytoremediation etc. to wider areas for tackling the unavailability of water which is going to be severe in the upcoming years.
- Rejuvenation of 2434 wells through Backwashing, a method of purifying the water through recharging the wells with rain water.

- Revitalization of 1251ponds through phytoremediation, the method of planting mangroves, mangrove associates, fruit bearing trees, herbs and aquatic plants in and around the water sources to improve the fresh water zone in the locality.
- Planting of mangroves and associates with community participation along the shores and fringes of the islands and the canal network. It is expected to develop a bio-shield for the area, propose protection from tidal wave attack, intense wind flow and provide breeding and nursery grounds for fishes, crabs and there by enhancing the fishery wealth of the area.
- Created awareness among the community through different campaigns to uphold and promote environment friendly activities.
- Implemented SPED (Sustainability through Participation, Empowerment and Decentralization) under SAFP (Save A Family Plan) programmes that promote revitalizing of environment resources.
