NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT
Roof –Top Rain Water Harvesting
It has become very clear that lack of adequate quantity of freshwater is going to be the most important resource limitation in this Century. It is out of question that harvesting rain water and making it to be used as drinking water is the most ideal and sustainable short-term solution for this alarming problem. KIDS is the first agency in Thrissur District to introduce roof top rain water harvesting. This was immediately well taken by the district Administration and with the technical assistance of KIDS, this programme was included as one among the most urgent items for District Level Planning.
Mangrove Bio-shield
Five species (more than 15000) of mangrove and associates were planted by the community in Sathar Island and VP Thuruth along the shores and fringes of the island and the canal network. Planting of mangroves done by the participation of the key stakeholders is expected to develop a bio-shield for the area, propose protection from tidal wave attack, intense wind flow and provide breeding and nursery grounds for fishes, crabs and there by enhancing the fishery wealth of the area.
Improvement of water potential for domestic purposes
Cleaning of the Tsunami affected traditional water sources was done as the first step of rejuvenation. Roof top rainwater was injected in to the cleaned ponds and wells and mangroves, mangrove associates, fruit bearing trees, herbs and aquatic plants were planted in and around the water sources in all these locations as part of the “phytoremediation” measures to improve the fresh water zone in the locality.
Watershed Management
Watersheds are considered the temples of modern India. They are the most ideal units where future development activities shall be based on. They are natural topographic, functional units for development. Co-restoration of watershed is the only solution for many of our environment problems today. Extensive efforts for the eco-restoration were done by husbanding and nursing back to health the life support systems namely land, water and biomass of the area, which were degraded through misuse and overuse. Its results are emerging out and yet to come out in the coming years.
