TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

Jalanidhi And Tribal Development Projects At Athirappilly
The govt. Of kerala selected kids for two of the major projects under the kerala rural water supply and sanitation agency (krwsa) schemes viz., ‘jalanidhi’ and tribal development plan. Both the projects have been implemented at athirappilly panchayat of thrissur district. This project was inaugurated by mr. Thiruvanjoor radhakrishnan, the then water resource minister of the state on 4th october 2003.

The project jalanidhi aims to provide drinking water and sanitation facilities to the needy people of athirappilly panchayat. Kids’ project team revitalized two major water supply schemes under kerala water authority and it was handed over to the transition monitoring committee of the panchayat. There were nineteen staff members working under the project at athirappilly. Nineteen beneficiary groups were formed as a part of this project and all the construction works related to the water supply scheme were done by these people out of their beneficiary contribution. Kids acts as a facilitating agency in this demand-driven project that covers 3045 households and a population of 5678. All of them were provided with safe drinking water, sanitation, soak pit etc. Eighteen women development initiatives have also been started to promote income generating activities and is going on well. On 30th june 2006, kids completed the project successfully and exit from the panchayath.

Tribal development plan

the second project, which has been successfully completed by the project team of kids, is a tribal development plan for the welfare of these tribal communities. In athirappilly panchayat alone, there are 13 tribal colonies in which tribal communities like kadar, muthuvar, mannan, malayar and ulladar dwell here. The total numbers of families living in these colonies come to around 1364. The developmental activities mainly focused on five components –community water supply scheme, sanitation, compost pit, skill training and rain water harvesting. Kids accelerated the construction of 304 new latrines and conversion of 24 one-pit latrines to two-pits with the full participation of tribal masons. Through this project 1098 houses were provided with domestic water connection and facilitated them to manage the micro water supply scheme themselves. The tribal people were given training in various fields for self employment through skill up gradation in masonry, apiculture, natural fibre craft production and plumbing works. Forest department, tribal department, tribal society, block panchayat and health department joined hands with kids in making this project a great success and sustainable. World bank review committee and uthranjal block panchayat members visited the project area and evaluated kids’ performance and also recommended to expand the services to other panchayaths also.
